Tauranga striker heads to Portugal

Tauranga footballer Tyler Boyd is taking his attacking skills abroad after agreeing a deal to join Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes at the end of the A-League season.

The Wellington Phoenix and All White has signed a four-year deal with the Primeira Liga outfit, who currently sit fifth in Portugal's top division.

Boyd has played 48 games for the Phoenix in two-and-a-half seasons, but has made just four appearances from the bench so far this season, with new recruit Nathan Burns leading the goal scoring charts.

Born in Tauranga, Boyd signed a three-year contract with the Phoenix in September 2012 before making his debut as a 17-year-old, coming on as a substitute in an A-League match against Sydney FC.

Boyd, along with Te Puke teammate Ryan Thomas, both made their All Whites debut last March in a friendly against Japan in Tokyo.

Thomas is currently plying his trade in Holland with Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle.

Initially joining the club on a one-year deal mid-way through 2013, Thomas earned a contract extension and is now committed to the Dutch club until 2018.

Boyd will leave the Phoenix in May.
