Mount pair secure national title

Mount Maunganui's pairing of Sam O'Dea and Mike Watson continue to come up trumps after completing a clean sweep of the national tour with victory at the New Zealand Beach Volleyball Open.

Held at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland this weekend, the pair - yet to be defeated on home soil since joining forces - eased through the early stages before a tense three-set battle with Tom Hartles and Rene Kapa in Sunday's final.

Winning the first set 21-19, they then dropped their first set of the tournament 21-23, before making amends 15-10 to clinch the overall title for the second consecutive year.

Following events at Mount Maunganui, Lake Karapiro and Mairangi Bay, as part of the NZ Open, the tennis centre was transformed into the hub of beach volleyball with 100 cubic metres of sand carted in for the three-day event.

The event was also a chance for New Zealand's best to start their season well as they lead into the Asian Tour and Olympic qualification.

Early on in the tournament O'Dea and Watson, current Oceania champions, breezed through both their pool matches along with the quarterfinal and semifinal ahead of the match up with Hartles and Kapa – who also went through without dropping a set.

A post on the pairs' Facebook page reads: 'Back-to-Back New Zealand Beach Volleyball Open champions! After a tough final, we managed to claim the tittle 15-10 in the third! It was unbelievable to be back playing at the ASB Tennis centre!

'We are also the series champions for the second year running and remain unbeaten on NZ soil. From here we are preparing for the final National Beach Volleyball Series in Perth, then the Asian Tour in Thailand.”

The have also recently qualified for the World Championships in June.

On the women's side of the draw, NZ number one women's seeds Julia Tilley and Shaunna Polley made amends for finishing a disappointing runners-up in 2014 with a two-set win against Danielle Quigley and Melissa Ruru.

After a game of powerful spiking, big blocks and amazing saves, Tilley and Polley managed to defeat their opponents 21-19 and 21-19.

The pair lost to Mille Elwin and Latika Henriette in last year's final, but went on to conquer those demons by beating Vanuatu opponents Joe and Matauatu in the semifinal 21-15 and 21-19.
