Public art in the community

Got a burning desire to learn more about how public art impacts your community? Then make sure you get down to the Baycourt X-Space today.

It'll be a full on day for the volunteers organisers of the Public Art Talks series with seven hours of conversation, discussion, learning and sharing taking place from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

The first talk in the series was held at The Incubator in the Historic Village and event developer Sonya Korohina says there was an exceptional response from the community.

'There was a great turn out on Tuesday,” says Sonya. 'We think there was a crowd of about 100 and it was a very diverse group of people who listened to [Rotorua District Council Arts Officer] Marc Spijkerbosch speak.

'It was great to see a diverse group of cultures and ages, and there was a fantastic Q&A and much discussion afterwards, with everyone energised and discussing aspects of Marc's talk.

'At the end of the day that was what we really wanted.”

Today's event will certainly be a tour de force of all things public art, with four different topics covered over seven hours.

These topics include: Artists engaging with cities, sites and communities, integrating public art into urban spaces and design, the contribution of Maori narrative through art, and the formal processes involved in establishing pieces of public art.

Of interest for Sonya will be the talk delivered by Auckland Council's Design Office general manager Ludo Cambell-Reid, who'll focus on how the city is quickly becoming a 'design-led city”.

'Given that our council has put a $9m injection into the CBD and waterfront, it would be a great opportunity for people to hear another story.”

It also wouldn't be a public art talk without some public art on display, and Sonya says they'll have two great examples on site tomorrow.

'We'll have the Amazing Travelling Photobooth who will be in the foyer taking photos for free photos for all who join in, and those photos will eventually be put together as a movie.

'BOP Polytechnic Bachelor of Creative Industry students will also be on-site too displaying their public art project,” says Sonya.

'This project saw them responded to different sites around the Mount and Tauranga with suggested artworks, so some will be on display as well.”

Sonya says the series is being very well received by all who take part and she'd like to thank everyone who has attended so far.

She's also encouraging everyone who has an interest, or even a mild curiosity, to come and take part as it effects them too.

'Something I feel really passionate is there is room for all forms of expressions and creativity in the community.

'If you think of any major city around the world there are many different layers of creativity and art work that happens

'And they all have their place and that's what makes a city a great city. So that should be encouraged.”

Tomorrow's third Public Art Talk featuring a wide array of guest speakers takes place at Baycourt X-Space, from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
