After conquering the Mount's walking tracks 38 times in 28 hours, it's fair to say Mel Gamlin and Sonia Arthur knocked the 'Mount” Everest Challenge off.
Starting at 6am on Thursday, the pair went without sleep and suffered countless blisters raising funds for surf lifesaving as part of More FM's 'Mount” Everest challenge.

For the past week people have been taking part in the challenge of walking up the Mount 38 times in 50 days, producing some amazing feats in the process. All proceeds raised go to Mount Maunganui, Omanu and Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Clubs.
None more so than Mel and Sonia's effort after setting out to complete it all in 24 hours.
'Sonja phoned me and said they were doing a Mount challenge and it was 38 times in 50 days and she asked if I was interested in doing it with her in one day,” says Mel.
'I said I think you're crazy but yip sure let's do it.”
Speaking to SunLive from the base of the Mount after the achievement on Friday afternoon, Mel says the pair are elated to have finished the tall task and are 'absolutely stoked” to have done it together.
Mel says she got involved in an effort to give back to the surf lifesavers given the hours they put in helping people out on the Mount and afterhours in the surf.
Walking for 28 hours, excluding a breakfast and dinner break, the pair didn't get a wink of sleep as they continuously wore a path up the Mount, aided by an overwhelming support crew.
'We had amazing friends who came over and supported us and did laps up and down the Mount,” she says.
'There was only about seven of the 28 hours that we walked by ourselves. The rest of the time we had friends, whanau, work mates and people from the gym.
Leading into the effort, the pair didn't do any training runs, but Mel says their 'sporty” backgrounds held them in good stead.
'We have both got three blisters which isn't too bad given we have been on our feet for so long,” she adds.
Also keen to throw his weight behind the fundraising is Vyron Smith, looking to complete the challenge in 50 hours.
From this morning, the 23-year-old will look to do round trips in 40-45 minutes.
Hooker for Mount Maunganui in Baywide Club Rugby and in the Bay of Plenty ITM Cup squad, Vyron says he goes up the Mount on a daily basis and is looking forward to the challenge.
'It's going to be more mentally tough for me, but it will be good heading into the rugby season,” he says.
More FM general manager Belinda Francis says so far $27,000 has been raised just one week into the event.
It is estimated more than 600 people are participating along with 270 fundraising pages set up – many in teams of up to 25 people.
