Lack of surf hampers Open

A poor surf forecast has forced officials to postpone the 2015 Coast Papamoa Beach New Zealand Longboard and SUP Open scheduled to take place this weekend.

Set down for Saturday and Sunday at Papamoa Beach, this is the second national event in three weeks to be rescheduled, with the average summer swell on the north east coast of New Zealand continuing to hamper events.

'We have been monitoring a storm system coming down from the tropics but unfortunately it is going to arrive 24-36 hours too late for the event to take place at Papamoa Beach” said contest director Ben Kennings.

The event has now been rescheduled for April 11-12.

'Through until April we have a busy schedule of regional, national and international events which has limited the options to hold the event any earlier,” adds Ben.

The 2014 event, also held in April, scored for some of the best waves Papamoa Beach has seen in the past decade thanks to a cyclone situated off the East Coast. It is hoped that Mother Nature will again deliver again for the new April time slot.

Support for the 2015 event has grown, with Coast Papamoa Beach coming on board as the title sponsor adding to the existing family of event sponsors.

It is hoped this will help promote the event further as the premier New Zealand longboard and stand-up paddleboard event.

Coast Papamoa Beach director Steve Short says it is a fantastic event for surfing and for Papamoa.

'As a popular surf beach, Papamoa is the perfect location for this flagship event,” he says.

'To have the New Zealand Longboard and Stand-Up Paddleboard Open on our doorstep is great for the local community and provides another reason for those who live outside the area to visit our slice of paradise.

'We are proud to be associated with the event and, as a surfer myself, I will be taking a keen interest in the competition.”

Entry into the Coast Papamoa Beach New Zealand Longboard and SUP Open has been extended through until April 7.
