Boult heads to IPL for $814k

Trent Boult has landed himself a healthy payday after being snapped up in the player auction for this year's Indian Premier League.

The left-arm swing man was bought for $814,000 by the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and was the top Kiwi in the lucrative auction.

Fellow fast bowlers Adam Milne ($170,000 to the Royal Challengers Bangalore), and Mitchell McClenaghan ($64,000 to the Mumbai Indians) were joined by all-rounder Jimmy Neesham after the Mumbai Indians picked him up for $107,000.

The sole batting buy was Bay of Plenty hotshot Kane Williamson, who joins Bay of Plenty teammate Boult at the Hyderabad side for $128,000.

Boult's $814,000 figure eclipses the $750,000 paid by the Mumbai Indians for Blackcaps all-rounder Corey Anderson in last year's auction.

The five new players supplement New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum (Chennai Super Kings), all-rounder Anderson (Mumbai), and bowlers Tim Southee (Rajasthan Royals) and Matt Henry (Chennai), who had existing contracts, giving New Zealand a solid nine-man hand in the IPL.

Those at the auction not attracting a bid were Ross Taylor, Luke Ronchi, Nathan McCullum, Hamish Rutherford, Doug Bracewell, Grant Elliott, Anton Devcich and Hamish Bennett.

Passed-in players could yet be picked in a second round of bidding on Tuesday.

Boult's bid price was the fourth-highest at the auction, behind the $3.43 million paid by Delhi for Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh.

For the Bay of Plenty speedster the almost immediate millionaire status comes after a rich vein of form this summer.

He now sits in sixth spot in the world test bowling rankings and is currently helping the Blackcaps push for a maiden ICC Cricket World Cup.

He now has the chance to partner South African speedster Dale Steyn in the tournament starting on April 15.

Other international superstars joining the Sunrisers ranks are Kevin Pietersen, England captain Eoin Morgan and all-rounder Ravi Bopara, with Steyn and David Warner already on their books.

The IPL opens on April 9 and finishes on May 25.

Other New Zealanders to miss out were Grant Elliott, Nathan McCullum, Doug Bracewell, Hamish Rutherford, Anton Devcich and Hamish Bennett, while Martin Guptill and Jesse Ryder were among those who didn't appear on the auction list.
