Fitness, fun and friendships is the motivation behind every step of the carefully choreographed routines at the Pacific Guards leisure marching display in Mount Maunganui today.

Adorned in matching outfits, 14 teams of women, aged 30 to 50-plus, are showing off their choreographed steps at Links Ave – some arriving from as far as Auckland.

Pacific Guards leisure marching team president Sharon Jackman says the display is a warm-up before the national event at ASB Arena on March 6-7.

'Every year we run an event at Links Ave about two or three weeks before the national display. It gives teams the opportunity to have a run through before we go to our national event."

'We're expecting about 900 registrations there, with teams coming from all over New Zealand.”

Each team completes a five-minute display of a choreographed routine. 'It all looks pretty spectacular really,” says Sharon.

Teams are dressed in different coloured uniforms, including lime green, red and white, blue and white – and purple. 'It makes a very colourful display”.

Sharon says the annual display is a marvellous event for mature women. 'It's the fitness, the friendship and the fun”.
