Kart race on track

The Farmer Auto Village Tauranga Street Race is on track to start qualifying early Saturday afternoon.

The biennial event sees the Bay of Plenty Kart Club come to downtown Tauranga to race as opposed to its usual venue in Te Puke on Alley Road.

The drivers line up with their kart's for pre competition scrutineering for safety and compliance.

This involves a huge setup with the conversion of a central part of Tauranga, surrounding Cameron Road, to be turned into a safe racing track.

The work on this commenced in the early hours of Saturday morning with roads closed off to the public from 6am. These will remain closed until Sunday at about 7pm.

Keep checking SunLive for full coverage of the kart race, including up-to-the-minute results on race day, Sunday.

Heavy machinery was needed to place the safety barriers.

This nonsense should be stopped forthwith - send the thing back to Te Puna in future. Closing major streets in downtown Tga just should not happen for a minor event like this.

Good to see.

An excellent event that shows that things do happen in sleepy Tauranga. Hope to see it again next year.
