Construction on the road will begin in late November – more than six months earlier than anticipated.
Steven says the benefits of the new road will be huge for the Bay of Plenty and very significant for the whole country.
'It's great to see such solid progress and to know that the very significant benefits of this project will now be felt even earlier.”
'It is estimated that on average 200 to 250 people will be working on the project at any given time over the next five years, with more jobs expected to be created or retained in support industries and the wider regional economy.”
It is estimated that the new road will shave up to 24 minutes off travel time for a return journey between Paengaroa and Te Maunga.
The road is estimated to cost a total of $455 million.

Once the road is finished, then what are the workers gonna do? If we had more public transport between all the towns along the coast, you would have to employ more bus drivers that will hang on to thier jobs for a much longer period of time than the road workers. If we used trains instead of trucks to ship goods, we wouldnt have to repair the road all the time and you would also have to employ more train drivers. Also, this road will only increase the number of cars on the road and generally contribute to climate change.
