Early start for Eastern Link

Construction of the Tauranga Eastern Link is to begin more than six months early with the New Zealand Transport Agency saying this is possible following the appointment of a consortium led by Fulton Hogan to conduct the design and build.

Other members of the consortium are: HEB Construction, Opus International Consultants, URS Corporation New Zealand, Peters and Cheung, and Bartley Consultants.

NZTA Bay of Plenty regional director Harry Wilson says the consortium was selected after a rigorous three month evaluation.

He says the Fulton Hogan-led consortium won the contract due to its submissions on several features including price, innovation and their proposed construction programme.

'We are committed to achieving value for money in delivering this project, and the tendered price for construction of $335 million represents a savings of $15 million or four per cent.”

The total cost of the project is $455 million, the most expensive roading project in New Zealand.

This is positive news and what we need in the area, just hope that people use the road when tolled. Let us hope that the same speed and work that was done with the Harbour link is achieved here.

Lets also hope that the quality of the construction is better than Route "K" and it doesn't fall apart adn require ongoing maintenance before the construction is handed over.
