A Tauranga St John Paramedic spokesperson says they attempted to resuscitate the teenager, 'but attempts were futile”.

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says the man was struck by a black Subaru car which then fled the scene.

'The pedestrian died as a result of injuries received. The vehicle left the scene and has since been located,” says Clifford.

'Police are speaking to several people in connection with the vehicle.”

Clifford says Welcome Bay Road remains closed between James Cook Drive and Kaitemako Road whilst a crime scene examination takes place.

Diversions are currently in place which will stop vehicles being able to travel along Welcolme Bay Road between James Cook Drive and Kaitemako Road.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says police are letting foot traffic through Johnson Reserve at the end of James Cook Drive.

Western Bay of Plenty Police are seeking any witnesses who may have seen this incident or the vehicle travelling in the Tauranga area during Monday evening.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
