The Leers come home tonight

Give three cheers to former Mount Maunganui band The Leers, who are throwing a free gig at Mount Brewing Co. Brew Bar tonight.

The four-piece band are especially looking forward to tonight after spending months toiling on their debut album which is set to be released very, very soon.

It'll be the first hometown show in a very long for The Leers' drummer Jack Furniss, bassist Jacob Buchan, lead guitarist James Kippenberger and vocalist/guitarist Matt Bidois.

'Yeah man, we're feeling really good,” says Matt. 'It's our first show in a while as we've been putting in the ground work for our album release.

'So we've been a bit busy and have gone a bit crazy and missing playing gigs, especially in our hometown.”

The Leers lads first met at the age of 14 at Mount Maunganui College and upon their graduiation, and realising they were on to a good thing, they made the move to Auckland in 2010.

Matt says they were having good success in Mount Maunganui which saw them gain a lot of traction, but with regular gigs up in Auckland it 'just made sense to move up there”.

The shift has worked well for The Leers and has opened up numerous doors for them.

'It's way bigger in scale,” adds Matt, 'and everyone who you should probably be meeting and speaking to are based up there, so it's way more helpful than being two-and-a-half hours down the road.

'And for some reason the Mount has quite a good reputation for people in Auckland. Soon as we say we're from the Mount people say, ‘Oh the Mount, sick!', which is great.”

Describing The Leers' sound Matt says it falls under the umbrella of indie rock, while pulling bits and pieces of inspiration from each of the band's eclectic musical tastes.

While this can make it difficult to pin-point an exact sound or genre, it does allow The Leers to explore a spectrum of emotion and feel, which can be difficult if you're stuck inside a fixed box.

Matt feels that listeners have to experience The Leers' music for themselves and 'put their own opinions to it”.

'We're pretty eclectic in our music tastes so we kind of take things from what we're listening to and incorporate it into our music. We get different comparisons after every show.

'The strangest comparison we've had was The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, which was a bit odd. I don't really think of us like that, but it's kind of cool to be compared to a band of that huge standing.”

Their hiatus from the stage in recent months has been due to the band going nuts on their debut album.

Matt can't offer an exact release date, as bits and pieces were still being hashed out, but says recording, mixing and mastering is all completed and now it's a matter of fine tuning the plans for the release.

'You know, date for release, how it will be released and the marketing around it; all those annoying things that take far too long,” Matt says before bursting out into laughter.

'As a musician you just want your music out there for the people to hear, but you have to tick all those small boxes so you can do it properly.”

The Leers joined by DJ's Dan Woolston and Pop Sh#ts are playing for free at Mount Brewing Co Brew Bar on Maunganui Rd tonight, from 9pm.
