If throwing a 20kg weight, walking with 100kg in each hand or flipping a 300kg tyre is your kind of fun, then the Bay of Plenty Strongest Man event is for you.
The third annual show of strength is back once again, hosted at the Tauranga A&P Show - an event described being for everyone, of any age, from the city or country.
2008 NZ Strongest Man Jono Macfarlane.
Held at the Tauranga Racecourse tomorrow, the competition has been running since 2013 when former New Zealand powerlifting and strong man champion Matt Rossiter approached show organisers after noticing there had never been an event of its kind in the region.
So in a mixture of strength, stamina and technique, some of the country's top heavyweights will push their bodies to the limit for the ultimate title, including defending champion Matt Ragg.
Being lighter on the scale proved the difference for Ragg last year after he and Johnno McFarlane tied on points which, as with international competitions, sees the lighter man win the contest.
Ragg, weighed in at 130.2kgs, while McFarlane, tipped the scales at 138.7kgs.
But he will have his work cut out if he's to land back-to-back titles, with 2008 NZ Strongest Man McFarlane and current NZ Strongest Man Colm Woulfe both weighing in over 150kg and over 1.95m tall.
Colm recently set a New Zealand record in the 20kg weight throw for height at 5.6 metres and this week deadlifted 350kg in the gym.
Also competing is the NZ Strongman masters champion Rudolph Sadaraka, offering up a very tough field this year.
Competitors will line up in four events to determine who will reign supreme, including a 20kg weight throw for maximum height (a traditional highland games event), the farmers walk with 100kg in each hand, a 300kg tyre flip (x8 flips) and an overhead log lift for maximum weight.
The Bay of Plenty Strongest Man event starts at 10am, with weigh in between 9am and 9.45am.
New Zealand's 2007 strongest man champion Jono ‘Wookie' Macfarlane, Commonwealth Games weightlifter Danny Nemani (Niue) and three time winner of New Zealand's strongest man Nick ‘The Hammer' Hansen will battle it out for muscle supremacy.
