Top seeds clinch titles

The top seeds at this year's National Beach Volleyball Championships have lived up to their billing, clinching their national crowns for the second consecutive year.

After two days of play under the searing sun at Mount Maunganui's Main Beach, the top 16 teams in both the men's and women's divisions were whittled down until thepairings of Mike Watson and Sam O'Dea, and Shaunna Polley and Julia Tilley came out on top.

After coming through unscathed in the men's division on the opening day, Watson and O'Dea got past Brad Fullerton and Daryl Lewis 21-16 and 21-14 in their semi-final.

And it was a boil over in the second semi, with Paora Morunga and Griffin Muller getting past Tom Hartles and Rene Kapa in three sets 16-21, 21-18 and 18-16.

Watson and O'Dea, reigning Oceania champs, then dispatched Morunga and Griffin 21-16 and 21-18 in the final.

On the women's side of the draw, Polley and Tilley were made to work for their national crown by Melissa Ruru and Danielle Quigley, after trouncing Kiri Hirini and Shannen Bagge in the semifinal 21-18 and 21-9.

Ruru and Quigley, who got past Micah Lindsay-Brown and Susana Vega 21-15 and 21-19, took Polley and Tilley to three sets before eventually losing 19-21, 21-10 and 15-10.

Volleyball NZ beach volleyball tour director Tim Cleaver says it was great to be part of the inaugural Mount Festival of Multisport, helping showcase the best the nation has to offer in terms of the sport.

'It was fantastic, the level was probably the best we have seen for four or five years now,” says Tim.

'There was lots and lots of foot traffic and lots and lots of people coming down and watching.”

With the titles in the bag for another year, the two winning pairs now head to Karapiro for tomorrow's Waikato Open, backing it up with the North Harbour Open this weekend.

An Australian side is also joining the fray in Karapiro.

Tim says the key for the likes of Watson and O'Dea, and Polley and Tilley is to be playing and training as much as possible in the lead up to the World Championships in the Netherlands in June and July.

He says: 'The top teams are also taking a break in the tour [in two weeks] and they are heading over to play in the Australian tour.

'So we are trying to fit in with that so they get maximum exposure to teams over there as well.”
