The Bay of Plenty side looked strong in the Bay Engineers Provincial Sevens Tournament pool competitions, but their hopes ended in the plate semis after a 26-5 loss to Taranaki.

The nation's best 18 Sevens provinces went head-to-head in the annual tournament at Mount Maunganui's Blake Park on Saturday.

The men won three of four pool plays while the woman won 15-5 to Waikato – but lost to Auckland and Wellington.

Bay Engineers Provisional Sevens tournament was a precursor tournament for next weekend's Bayleys National Sevens tournament in Rotorua.
