Sunshine and visitors over the long weekend should pull a decent crowd along to Baypark on Saturday for the first collisions of the speedway season.
The grand opening for the 2010/2011 season includes 15 races around the track between 7pm and 10pm.
Baypark Speedway spokesperson Glenys Vickers says a large number of drivers are travelling from Auckland and Palmerston North.
'It will be a large contingent, with full fields.
'It should be a pretty exciting evening of racing.”
The racing will include sprint cars, super saloons, stock cars and mini stock cars.
'We are opening on a traditional speedway weekend, which we haven't being able to do the past two years for various reasons.
'The weather is expected to be good so we should get a big crowd.”
The Baypark Speedway calendar lists a number of big events for the season including the New Zealand Sprint Car Championship in January.
The spokeswoman says Baypark gets up to 10,000 people to some of their larger events.
She says more people attend Baypark than any other speedway stadium in New Zealand.
Gates open at 5pm Saturday, with ticket sales costing $20 for adults, $10 for children aged 8-14, children under eight get in free, senior citizens are $5.
Family concession tickets for two adults and up to four children are $45.
'Our ticket prices haven't changed since we opened 10 years ago.”

I'm not sure what Glenys was thinking when she said the prices haven't changed, a child used to be $5 now you are charging $10. That is not a fair price for a show classed as family entertainment.

Who cares its a nonevent these days with crowds of no more than 3000 most racing nights.Bad track surface, my way or the highway management mentality and continual bickering between the operator and TCC. It's days are numbered thank heavens.

If it closed would save a fortune, may even get a rates reduction ? But still have the debt to pay off. Yet another vacated "TOWN" Hall wonder project.

Council only get a set fee per meeting, the operator gets the ticket money, more people makes no difference toteh Council loss because no more money comes in.
