Mount Maunganui swimmer Perry Farrell has double reasons to celebrate the New Year after taking out two titles in back-to-back swimming events this weekend.

More than 250 swimmers set off from Pilot Bay in the 32nd edition of the Round the Mount swim this morning, with Mount swimmers dominating the race taking first, second and third place.

Perry, 19, claimed his first win, with fellow Mount Surf Club swimmers Kane Sefton and Hamish Miller finishing second and third.

'I think what made it better is that two other Mount Surf Club boys got second and third,” says Perry.

'It's pretty cool taking that out. It's a pretty milestone event around Mount so I guess it's something nice to tick off.”

This is Perry's third time swimming the estimated 4km event, with the teenager usually coming in second to New Zealand 1500m record-holder and Greerton swimmer Nathan Capp. But this time Perry took the win, with Nathan taking out the 7.5km race.

'It was a pretty choppy swim aye so it was hard to get into a good rhythm,” says Perry. 'I just tried to stick with Nathan at the start. He's doing the 7.5km swim and he's just so quick.”

Perry wasn't too keen on entering the longer race after recently returning from New Year celebrations at the Rhythm and Vines Festival in Gisborne.

The teenager also took out the annual Murray Dingle Memorial Bridge to Bridge swim yesterday – a 1500m from the Sebel Trinity Hotel to the railway bridge by Harbourside Restaurant.

His plan for the rest of the weekend is to go home for a nap before heading straight into training tomorrow.
