Good morning and welcome to 2015! Hopefully all you SunLive readers had a fantastic New Year's Eve filled with fun, spent with friends and loved ones.

There's plenty happening in and around the area for people to do today, like the cricket which sees the Skycity Northern Nights take on the Wellington Firebirds at Bay Oval in Blake Park, from 12pm.

The Knights will look to push their claim in the annual Ford Trophy and will also hope to go one better and lift the domestic One Day International title this season.

Northern Knights coach James Pamment says the team are looking forward to today's match.

'It's a big thing for New Zealand as we have got the World Cup coming up afterwards. One day matches are going to be the thing this year.”

In a dash of extra spice, the early rounds of the competition give fringe Blackcaps the chance to stake a claim for a spot in the 15-man World Cup squad for the tournament jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia in February.

While Bay of Plenty's Blackcaps Kane Williamson, Trent Boult and Corey Anderson won't be available due to national duty, up to half of dozen BOP players could wear the Knights' uniform at the Bay Oval next month.

The Ford Trophy is the New Zealand Cricket Limited Over (50 overs per team) prize that dates back to the 1971/72 season.
