UPDATE 2.30PM: State Highway 2 at Otara, south of Opotiki, has now fully re-opened following this morning's crash in Waioeka Gorge.
Three rescue helicopters were dispatched following the two-car incident which happened shortly after 10am.

The Tauranga based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter was scambled along with the Rotorua Baytrust rescue helicopter and Waikato's Westpac rescue helicopter.
Five people were injured, with three of the most severely injured flown to Tauranga Hospital for further treatment.
Helicopters were called due to the nature of the injuries and the distance to the appropriate hospital.

Waioeka Gorge has been closed to traffic in both directions following a serious two-car crash south of Opotiki.
The incident happened just after 10am on State Highway 2 at Otara and the road is currently blocked.
A total of five people were involved in the crash, and they are currently being transported to hospital.
The extent of their injuries remains unknown as this time.
Police and ambulances are currently at the scene and the Tauranga Serious Crash Unit are investigating the cause.
Police are advising drivers in the area to delay their journey or use an alternative route.
