Greerton defeat Carrus in cup decider

Eves Realty Greerton have become just the third Bay of Plenty Cricket Club to have their name engraved on the Baywide Cup after deafeating Carrus Mount Maunganui in the 2014 title decider at Blake Park on Saturday.

The two sides were meeting for the second successive weekend, with Greerton winning the toss and again asking the home team to bat first.

The early ascendancy lay with the Greerton bowlers before Mount keeper Tim Clarke dug deep to post his sides top score of 69. Mount Maunganui College student Blair McKenzie, who was playing just his second game for the Mount Maunganui premiers, batted with some authority to reach 36, with Alex Gooding batting at nine contributing a very useful 30 runs.

Mount Maunganui were dismissed for 202 in the 57th over, which set the Greerton side a good challenge. Part time Greerton bowler Tom MacRury took three wickets with Charles Williams returning 2/26.

Greerton made a reasonably patient start to their run chase. After the visitors lost their first wicket, opener Tom MacRury started to hit out and was rewarded with his side's top score of 69. The arrival of Cam Neal at the crease changed the momentum of the game as he blasted the ball to the boundary, including five big sixes. Greerton needed thirty odd runs for victory when Neal was bowled out for 48, with Brett Hampton getting then home for a six wicket win with an unbeaten 44.

The Greerton victory was just their second Baywide trophy since back to back Williams Cups in 1984 and 1985. The Baywide Cup victory also gives Greerton the Bay of Plenty ND Club Champs berth for the first time. Mount Maunganui's second place finish and high standing in the Baywide T20 puts then a good position to again clinch the Baywide champions of champions trophy awarded at the end of the season.

Element IMF Cadets finished in third place in the Baywide First Round title race when they defeated Te Puke at the Tauranga Domain. Te Puke batted first and posted 144 all out, with Scott Tallott (42) and club stalwart Stephen Crossan (34) getting amongst the runs. Black Cap bowler Trent Boult making a rare appearance for his club took five wickets for 24 runs.

The home side were made to fight hard for the win, losing six wickets on the way. Cadets skipper Ben Christensen led his team to victory with 36 runs, with Brodie Gilroy (3/47) and Mitch McCann (2/24) taking wickets for Te Puke.
