When Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy first appeared in 1983, the scruffy black dog with a knack for a rhyme instantly captured readers' hearts and minds.
The famous little dog and all his friends were created by author Dame Lynley Dodd, and this Saturday she will be at the Tauranga Art Gallery signing books, from 10am to 11.30am.

'We're absolutely thrilled to have the remarkable Dame Lynley Dodd coming in for a pre-Christmas book signing session,” says gallery director Penelope Jackson.
'What a fantastic chance to get some very personal Chrissy pressies!”
There's no limit on how many books you can get signed, but they must be bought from the gallery's shop, either on the day or before the signing session, says Penelope.
If you do buy a book from the gallery before Saturday make sure you take along your receipt as proof of purchase.
Penelope says they have a great range of Dodd's books, so mark Saturday down in your diary.
'It will be the perfect day to come to your Gallery and get Christmas pressies for the little ones sorted!”
The Dame Lynley Dodd Book Signing Session will be held at the Tauranga Art Gallery, corner of Warf and Willow streets, Tauranga, this Saturday, December 13, from 10am to 11.30am

It is totally unfair that a heavily ratepayer subsidised outfit like the Art Gallery is selling books in competition with privately owned bookstores. Really ironic that private bookshops actually pay rates and probably taxes, and that some of their rates go towards the gallery. The thanks for that is that the gallery now has a book signing session where you have to have bought the book from its shop. I find this remarkable.

You gotta love this Council. Logic at its best.

People have a whinge when the council funds the gallery and ask why it can't support itself - now when they operate a commercial activity in order to increase revenue they get panned for that as well! Can't have your cake and eat it too....

I agree with Annalist. i have a much loved held together with book tape copy of hairy mclary I would love to get signed. Why not open the session to any book by dame lynley Dodd for a gold coin donation to charity? Or even a donation towards getting the doggie statues installed?
To raise funds and promote...

Is this event to raise funds for the Hairy Maclary statues waiting to put in place on The Strand waterfront. The irony in part is that the statues will directly increase the profile and sale of the books further adding to the income of the author - Great if you can get away with it, and they do! An on-going Community funded advertising campaign. Do the book sales contribute in any on-going way towards the upkeep of the statues?
Signing on Saturday

That is a very safe move to make, Saturday morning, there will definitely be no officials around to try and extract donations Saturday. So I guess her bank account is safe from the wannabee fund collectors for the Hairy Fairy McWeary collectors. But maybe she wil leave a cheque anyway, would be best she did, that much is overdue.
