Bay’s challenge hopes dashed

Bay of Plenty's charge for the 2015 ND Hawke Cup Direct Challenge has evaporated following a batting capitulation against Counties Manukau at the annual ND One-Day tournament.

While the Bay side went into the third day of play in Taupo with a one point lead, it was all in vain after Counties Manukau proved too strong.

Bay of Plenty were dismissed for 132 - some 56 runs short of their target.

Batting first, Counties were dismissed for 188, with Luke Williamson top scoring with 42 runs. Bay bowlers Brett Hampton, Mitch McCann and Jason Trembath took two wickets apiece.

The Bay's opening batsmen strode to the crease full of purpose, however the loss their first two wickets for 30 runs had them on the ropes early on.

Hampton's arrival at the crease at 43/3 gave the team some optimism as he went about turning the tide.

But when he was adjudged LBW on 37, the Bay side were in real trouble at 93/6.

A fighting knock of 19 from Jono Boult restored some stability, however with the last four batsmen mustering just 18 runs, Bay of Plenty were dismissed for 132 and came up 56 runs short of their target.

The result sees the Bay side finish the three-day tournament with a sole victory against Northland.
