Police are still investigating a two vehicle crash on Maunganui Road which saw the northbound lane briefly blocked yesterday afternoon.

The vehicles involved in the crash sustained significant damage and had to be towed away.

Police were called to the crash between and van and a car 500m from the intersection with Clyde Street just after 2pm.

'It appears one of the drivers has been distracted and crossed the centre lane, crashing with an oncoming vehicle,” says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

Ian says the crash is still under investigation and it's too early to say if charges will be laid or not.
