Update: 11.43AM The chequered flags are down and wheels are spinning at Omokoroa No.1 School this morning, as drivers boost around the Plummers Point Rd school field on their ride on mowers.

Riders start their engines.

Omokoroa No.1 School's Gala and Original Ride-On Mower Race Day has begun, with an estimated 3000 people pouring in to get a glimpse of the action.

Race day coordinator Bronwyn Carter says the day is going great so far.

'We've got lots of people here and lots of new activities. I think we're approaching 3000 [people] at the moment.”

Bronwyn says the water walkers and the new addition of the mechanical bull are proving very popular.

'The mower racing's going ahead with no problems and the helicopter is going, there's no rain and wind out here – we're all good.

'It's all going well, we're having a great time so come and join us.”

The event, from 10am to 3pm, is the school's major annual fundraising event. This year's funds will go towards the Information Technology department.

SunLive photographer Cameron Avery captured some of the action.
