Last week's announcement by Transport Minister Steven Joyce that the give way rules will change in 2012 have met with motoring industry approval.
The Automobile Association endorses the decision to give right of way to left-turning traffic and driver instructors say it will improve road safety.
But did the give way rule need to change?
SunLive visited the Gate Pa shopping centre to find out if people there knew the current give way rule and if they thought changing it was a good idea.

Why would you change it to 'give way to your right - except sometimes when you need to give way to your left' - huh?? And they thought it was confusing before? Mind you, it's every man for himself on most roads anyway!

the past govts has taught bad road rules, at an uncontrolled intersection the right turning car not often gives way to cars turning right eg spring st right into gray st doesnt giveway to gray st turning right into spring st, many forget this is why it is wrong, that a left turning car gives way to cars on the right when following cars going straight have to slow or stop, i was diving when this current law was introduced and was so much against it and needs to be removed asap + id like to see a law like in ausie that when a bus wants to exit a bus stop all traffic must slow to let it enter the flow,
