A Whitianga charity event's spooky approach to fundraising has raised more than $10,000 for Mercury Bay Community Pool Trust.
Gothic Glam Ball organisers Rekha Percival and Rebecca Edwards.
Hosted by RnR Events and sponsored by Peninsula Party Hire, the Gothic Glam Ball in October helped raise funds for a new lifeguard kiosk and chemical shed at the swimming pool next to Mercury Bay Area School.
Event co-organiser Rekha Percival says the ball, held in a massive marquee at a private residence in Whitianga, went off without a hitch.
Rekha says with about 200 tickets sold, the event raised $10,290.
'The night consisted of arrival drinks, canapés, a signature cocktail, circus theatre performances by the Dust Palace performers and dancing until late, with five-piece band The Dukes of Hammersmith.
'Both sets of entertainment travelled down from Auckland for the ball.” Rekha would like to thank the number of Whitianga businesses and individuals who came together and donated their time and services to the event.
Mercury Bay Community Pool Trust spokesperson Sandra Fitzsimons is 'absolutely delighted” with the amount of money raised from the ball.
'It was an amazing night they did so much work it's unbelievable. The amount of hours they put into it and the incredible transformation of a marquee into what they did it was an incredible night.
'And the community getting behind the event, the costumes that they did and the over-the-top-ness of everybody, is wonderful. We're so delighted we don't have words for it.”
Sandra says the pool entry is currently manned by lifeguards sitting at an old wooden picnic table underneath a crooked umbrella.
'It was a school pool and now it's a community pool, but unfortunately it still looks like a school pool.
'It's just not a professional look. So a nice kiosk will also generate income because we'll be selling ice-creams and drinks from there as well which is much needed for the swimmers.”
Hoping to secure a local builder to create the new kiosk and chemical storage area, Sandra says the new additions to the community pool will be ready as soon as possible.
