Whangamata surfer Grace Spiers has opened her World Surfing Games account with a sharp performance, putting her through to the second round in Peru.
After watching her Kiwi team mates compete on the first two days of the Claro ISA 50th Anniversary World Surfing Games, Spiers produced a first-rate heat victory.

The New Zealand Surfing Team is one of 22 countries taking part in the global event at Punta Rocas, Peru from October 24 to November 1.
The surf has been remarkable for the first three days of the event, with waves in excess of 2m each day and a lack of wind making surface conditions perfect on the predominant right-hand point break.
Posting a 13.5 point heat total out of a possible 20, Spiers' progression never looked in doubt against fellow competitors from Australia, Chile and Columbia.
Surfing to a heat-high 7.67 point ride early in the heat, she eventually progressed in first place alongside Australia's Jessica Grimwood.
'I've just been watching the conditions and going for free surfs, making sure I stayed relaxed over the last two days,” she says.
But she admits 'nerves still snuck up” on her this morning before entering the water.
'The surf is really fun and it was awesome to have the line-up with just three other people out,” adds Grace. 'I felt really good about my heat strategy and choice of waves as well.”
The New Zealand Team are benefitting from their centrally-located base which is right behind the event site.
This has allowed their full attention to be given to the surf break from the comfort of their accommodation, which opens out onto the sand.
'It's good to compete as a team - everyone is just cruising and being supportive so it's a nice environment to be around,” says Grace. 'We're so lucky with the place were staying in.”
The other Kiwi in action today was Tane Wallis of Piha, who's run of exceptional heat performances came to an end after placing third in his heat and being pushed into the reperchage rounds.
Wallis finished with a 9.56 point heat total and only needed an average scoring 5.65 point ride to progress through the heat, but he came up short against surfers from Costa Rica and Mexico.
Wallis, along with Spiers, will have a lay day on day 4 while team mates Sean Dillon of Taranaki, Otago's JC Susan and Piha's Zen Wallis will be in action contesting Reperchage rounds two and three.
