Staff at Western Bay of Plenty supermarkets will be busy on Thursday night adjusting GST before it comes into force on Friday.
Progressive Enterprises, the company that owns Countdown, Woolworths and Foodtown, will close its supermarkets from 10pm.
Countdown Cameron Road is one of the Progressive Enterprise supermarkets that might be a bit slow opening on Friday, depending on how quickly its staff can adjust all price tags there to match the GST increase to 15 per cent.
The company's communications manager, Penny Newbigin, says there is a lot of work that has gone on behind the scenes to prepare for the new GST rate.
She says it is costing Progressive Enterprises $1 million to roll out nationwide.
"It's been a substantial systems change. We're having to do it on a large scale."
Progressive Enterprises' supermarkets will open at 10am on Friday at the latest.
