The new Tauranga harbour bridge and flyovers this week received the supreme award from the 2010 Roading Excellence Awards.
The Tauranga Harbour Link project, involving Fletcher Construction, the New Zealand Transport Agency and Beca, stands out due to the attention to detail in its planning, the way in which risks were identified and managed and the precision of the operation, say the judges.
The Harbour Link Project is the supreme award winner at the 2010 Roading Excellence Awards.
The three-year undertaking to add a second harbour bridge linking Tauranga and Mount Maunganui was completed under budget and three months ahead of schedule.
Stage two included the creation of a 468m long harbour bridge with a pedestrian and cycleway, 550m long four-lane flyover and the widening and refurbishment of the existing harbour bridge.
The second part of the two stage project won the Greenstone Energy Excellence Award for a Major Road Project as well as the Roading New Zealand Supreme Award.
Roading New Zealand chief executive Chris Olsen says all award entries demonstrate the new levels of best practice and construction excellence which have been adopted by the industry.
"As the country emerges from a recession the roading industry remains a hugely competitive environment," says Chris.
"The quality of projects showcased by these awards is a strong indication that the sector is able to maintain extremely high standards."
The Roading Excellence Awards promote leadership, excellence and best practice in the provision of land transport infrastructure.
Entry is open to all organisations involved in roading projects carried out in New Zealand.
