'Play in the Bay' this month

Bay of Plenty locals are being urged to embrace the great outdoors in October during a themed month aimed at people of all ages, fitness and abilities.

Charitable trust Sport Bay of Plenty are promoting a number of activities as part of their ‘Play in the Bay' programme, and have designated October as Outdoors Month to coincide with daylight saving, the warmer weather and longer days.

Beach volleyball on Mount Maunganui beach is just one of the activities being promoted by Sport Bay of Plenty.

High on their agenda is stand-up paddling and dragon boating, glow worm walks, beach volleyball and a number of fundraising walks, including the ‘guns and roses' historic walk on October 30.

Western Bay of Plenty Recreation Advisor, Jen Riley, says: 'The Bay of Plenty is rich with beautiful parks, beaches and reserves and locals are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to amazing scenery and getting outdoors.

'Through Outdoors Month you can have experience some of these amazing locations.

'Most of us know the importance of being active and all the health benefits associated with regular physical activity but often we find it hard to prioritise actually getting out there and active.

'The great thing about ‘Play in the Bay' is that it gives you new ideas on ways to be active and once you find something you enjoy then exercising won't be such a chore.

'Taking part is also an ideal way to learn a new skill or activity and a great way to meet new people.”
