List makes Halloween spooktacular

There's no special trick to treating children to an awesome Halloween night this year – all you need is a list.

Just like Santa Claus, Halloween lover Eloise Green has been compiling a list of Whitianga's trick-or-treating friendly houses since last year.

It's a labour of love for Eloise who started the list to avoid children getting their feelings hurt by locals who do not celebrate Halloween.

Nothing is going to stop children trick-or-treating so why not keep them safe while keeping others happy at the same time, she says.

'Two years ago a group of us went trick-or-treating and some people who didn't celebrate Halloween were unfortunately, for lack of a better word, quite nasty.

'So I thought if the town could do a list for garage sales on Queens Birthday weekend, why couldn't I do it for Halloween?”

Thus the list was born.

Started last year more than 45 people registered themselves on Eloise's list being as trick-or-treating friendly.

It was an overwhelming success and from the feedback she received afterwards there was not a single negative comment.

'The most positive were the people who dislike Halloween, saying it was a beautiful evening and they didn't worry about children knocking on their door at all hours.

'Last year we had costumed parents and hordes of children walking the street, and the spirit! The spirit was absolutely phenomenal.”

Eloise will be approaching this year's list in a different manner and is utilising the internet to spread the word.

Registration sheets will be available at an assortment of local business, but Eloise has also started a Facebook page that people can register through.

Once compiled it will be printed off with a map of Whitianga so it's like a treasure hunt for children too.

'Last year I printed around 1700 lists but I don't need to go that big this year thanks to the internet. I'll also be able to email a copy to people.”

To cover printing and advertising costs Eloise is raffling off two food hampers generously donated by New World Whitianga.

Eloise will be down at the supermarket on Joan Gaskell Dr this Saturday selling raffle tickets in the foyer. She will also sell tickets the following Saturday on October 18.

The Warehouse have also donated items for an arts and crafts hamper which Eloise will raffle off on Halloween.

'The raffles are simply to cover the cost of printing and if any funds are left over I'll donate them to local charities as I feel that's another way of paying back the community.”

Eloise wants to thank the community and local businesses who have supported her efforts to compile the trick-or-treating friendly list.

She also would like to remind those who signed up last year that they will need to re-register for this new list.

'I'm a prop builder, tinkerer, Steam Punk enthusiast and Cosplayer. Halloween falls beautifully into those categories which is why I love it.

'Halloween is just awesome, it's the one day of the year when I can take my mask off!”

Eloise is selling raffle tickets in the foyer of New World Whitianga at 1 Joan Gaskell Dr this Saturday and again on October 18.
