Afghanistan end on a high

Afghanistan ended their tour at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui with two wins and two defeats after beating the Northern Knights yesterday.

The visitors won the toss and posted 264/7 from their 50 overs, while the Knights fell short in reply, finishing on 248/9.

Usman Ghani, who blasted a century against Auckland last weekend, went on the attack once more and nothched a handy 44 before being caught by Tim Siefert in the 17th over.

His replacement Najibullah Zadran then played a patient knock before being dismissed for 41.

The arrival of Asghar Stanikzai upped the ante, with the Afghanistan number six batsman smashing his way to 63, which included 6 sixes, off just 47 balls.

Samiullah Shiwari continued the attack and was unbeaten on 32 at the crease, while Bay of Plenty's Jono Boult was the best of the Knights' bowlers, taking three wickets for just 24 runs.

Another Bay of Plenty player, Bharat Popli, ensured his team responded well before being dismissed for a top score of 58. And when the third Knights wicket fell for an identical score of 117, the encounter was delicately poised.

But while Tim Seifert (48 not-out) and Jono Hickey (44) made solid contributions, the visiting bowlers took four wickets for eight runs to take control and see out a 16 run victory.

Samiullah Shinwari finished with his team's best figures of 2/21, with Dawlat Zadran and Mohammed Nabi also taking two wickets apiece.
