Club cricket eyes dry start

After a wet false start to the BOPCA Baywide cricket season, defending Williams Cup champions Te Puke and Greerton take centre stage in as the first ball of the season is bowled on Saturday.

Last weekend not a single over was played in all four scheduled match-ups because of the inclement weather, meaning all sides will be chomping at the bit for some summer action.

This week's match of the round sees a replay of last season's Williams Cup title decider on the artificial wicket at Pemberton Park, between City Sports Bar Te Puke and Eves Realty Greerton.

In last season's decider Te Puke batted first, posting a very defendable 244.

New recruit Blair Parlane top scored with a hard fought 48 runs, with Dan Spencer taking four wickets for Greerton at a cost of 34.

The Te Puke side grabbed their first Williams Cup in a decade, when they strangled the Greerton batsmen's attempts to hit out and removed them for just 109 to cruise to victory.

Jeremy Bates bowled with purpose to take five of the Greerton scalps for just 26 runs.

Defending Baywide Cup champions Carrus Mount Maunganui could have a real battle on their hands when Rotorua Central pays a visit to Blake Park.

The Rotorua side have recruited well in the off season and won the Baywide T20 competition earlier this year to give the side plenty of confidence.

But Mount Maunganui are also the current Baywide champion of champions after annexing the Hart Family Trophy, and with a mostly unchanged line-up, will wear the mantle of the Baywide Cup favourites.

Element IMF Cadets will play away from their traditional base at the Tauranga Domain, courtesy of the early season games being played on artificial surfaces, and meet Whakatane United at Ferguson Park.

Tauranga Boys College are at home on the artificial wicket at Nicholson field and square off against BOP Indians in a game that could go down to the wire.

Baywide Cup Draw October 11 – Round Two:

Element IMF Cadets v Whakatane United, Ferguson4.

Tauranga Boys College v BOP Indians, Nicholson Field artificial.

Carrus Mount Maunganui v Central, Blake Park artificial.

Eves Realty Greerton v City Sports Bar Te Puke, Pemberton Park artificial.
