Bay star to wear Sevens black

It's been a lengthy wait, but the Bay of Plenty can once again lay claim to a Bay boy representing the region in Sir Gordon Tietjens' highly successful All Black Sevens squad.

After being put through his paces at the ripe old age of 30, Matt Clutterbuck has impressed enough to be named in Sir Titch's final squad tasked with contesting the 2014/15 HSBC World Sevens Series.

The Rangataua club player was plucked from obscurity about a month ago having only played Sevens for Otago and at club level as well as working hard as part of the All Black Sevens development squad for a shot on the world stage.

He is joined in the squad by the Bay's Scott Curry - a mainstay in recent seasons who has transferred back to the Bay from Manawatu.

Clutterbuck and Otago speedster Tony Ensor are the two new caps to the squad after putting in impressive performances last weekend in the side that lost the Noosa Sevens Final to Fiji.

Clutterbuck's selection ends a 16-month stint where the Bay had no players in the national side after Toby Arnold called it quits on New Zealand, opting for French rugby instead.

And the Bay has a proud history of Sevens stars donning the black jersey, including Arnold, Chad Tuoro and Tanerau Latimer.

Sir Titch says the Noosa tournament provided essential preparation for this weekend's first leg of the 2014/2015 HSBC World Sevens Series on Australia's Gold Coast.

He says: 'That tournament wasn't about winning for us. For me the most important thing was sevens conditioning and nothing beats real game time to help the guys get that.

'We've got a few guys who haven't played sevens for a while or who haven't had a lot of rugby due to injury and Noosa certainly helped guys like Sherwin (Stowers), Lote (Raikabula) and Tomasi (Cama) get back on the Sevens horse.

'I'm pretty happy with how the boys went, and it's just what we needed heading into the first tournament of the World Series.”

Sir Titch says the mind-set heading into the Gold Coast tournament is 'pretty simple” - produce a strong day one performance before kicking on towards the playoffs.

'We want to win this first leg of the World Series to kick-start our campaign,” he adds.

'This is the most important year for us in terms of our road to the Olympics. We can't take anything for granted and from our point of view, there are no easy games, so the goal is to win.”
