Steamers smash second win

The Bay of Plenty Steamers have staved off the ITM Cup wooden spoon for another week after a five try haul saw them crush Otago 33-16 at ASB Baypark.

With the wet weather halting prior to the match, the Steamers produced their best performance of the season by far, securing their second win of 2014 and a four-try bonus point in the process.

It moves the home side on to 13 points in the championship division, two points behind Otago in the battle for the wooden spoon.

Trailing 3-0 after the opening quarter the Steamers quickly snapped into gear with three quick tries and a 19-3 lead.

Catalyst for the side was wing Siaosi Iongi proving a handful for the Otago defence, bumping out of a number of tackles.

Putting on a barnstorming run down the left hand touchline Iongi was eventually brought down five short of the line before quick ball allowed first five Dan Hollinshead to cross.

Buoyed by momentum the home side's forwards, after another Iongi burst, kept it in tight with hooker Joe Royal diving over for his fifth try of the season.

Things went from bad to worse for Otago with midfield Michael Collins' clearance kick charged by fullback Bryon McGuigan who managed to regather and scoot 30m untouched.

A late try through Otago prop Aki Seuli on the stroke of the half drew the score to 19-10.

A pair of Otago penalties, through the boot of Hayden Parker, opened the second 40min with the Steamers seemingly going back to sleep.

But finding their rhythm again the Steamers secured a four-try bonus point with No.8 Carl Axtens and Hollinshead combining, the latter crossing for a brace.

Steamers wing Leroy Van Dam then produced a scintillating individual try with two minutes left on the clock, spinning and breaking out of a handful of tackles, for the 33-16 finish.

Up front Royal, lock Tim Bond and Axtens got through a power of work while Hollinshead, McGuigan and Iongi were the pick of the backs.

The Steamers finish their ITM Cup campaign against Waikato in Hamilton next Thursday.
