Bay steam roll King Country

Bay of Plenty beat King Country 64-nil to win the semi-finals in the bottom five of the Roller Mills rugby tournament at ASB Baypark Stadium today.

Players braved rain and hail to post the win in Tauranga this afternoon.

Players brave the elements to compete in the 2014 Roller Mills rugby tournament.

Roller Mills is the second oldest rugby tournament in New Zealand after the Ranfurly Shield.

It began in 1925 when the Northern Roller Milling Company in Auckland present the shield for the competition between primary school teams from rugby unions within the Auckland province.

Bay coach Cliff Honey says it was semi-finals rugby and that's the way they approached the game today.

'King Country haven't had a very good run through but you never take any team lightly. There were too many mistakes in the first 10 minutes for us but then we finally put some patterns together and found our rhythm.

'When they tries started coming, the boys got more confident and away we went.”

Cliff says it was great running rugby to see.

'We targeted 30-nil for half-time and it was 31-nil. You give these boys and target and they aim for it.

'I'm not taking anything away from King Country, they are a good side. It was good to see the boys putting a good performance together today.”

Cliff is now preparing the team to play the winner of the Harbour and Counties Manukau match which is being played later today.

The final will be played at 11am in Te Puke.

If they win tomorrow's game, the Bay side will be placed fifth overall. But if they lose they will drop down to sixth slot.
