The Bay of Plenty surfing team is on track to reign supreme at the National Scholastic Surfing Championships, taking the lead in strong fashion on the penultimate day.
In stunning conditions at Taranaki, the Bay side accumulated a 1000-point lead - considerable given they traded a slender lead with the home region all day.

Day three of the event was contested at Back Beach in clean 1m waves after a change in location to capitalise on the building swell. The wind remained light all day with a touch of sea breeze to the delight of all the competitors.
Jordan Griffin led the Bay side into the final day by winning the last heat of the day with a 17.47 point heat total.
Griffin has been a class act all event and looked relaxed in each heat - a strategy he requires to avoid competition nerves.
'I try not to take heats too serious,” he says.
'It kills my nerves if I try to be a bit laid back and it is something I talk about with the rest of the team – don't think about your heat too much kind of thing.”
Griffin is joined in the Under-18 Boys Finals by team mates Callum Chuter and Andrew Fraser-MacKenzie along with Canterbury's Harrison Whiteside.
The Bay side have a further five surfers in action on the final day of the event where they will look to make it a three-peat of titles.
The Farr brothers Josh and Daniel, Taranaki, dominated the Under-16 Boys Division again posting heat wins in back-to-back semi-finals to help keep their team in second place.
Josh, the older of the brothers will be keen to seek out a first national level win on the final day of the event and make up for his missed opportunity in 2013.
'Last year I went to the dairy before my semis and missed my heat so I am looking forward to tomorrow's final” says Josh.
The older of the Farr siblings is unfazed about a match up with his younger brother tomorrow, claiming it was a free-for-all in the final and that all the points will go to their Taranki team anyway.
'There is no helping each other out in a in a final,” he says. 'Maybe in earlier rounds but not in a final.”
