The New Zealand Invitation Team has claimed a comfortable win over the NZ Maori Team at the Carrus Open.

The New Zealand European born team eased to a 39 shot win in the inaugural championship at the Tauranga Golf Club.

The New Zealand Invitation Men (678 total) dominated the NZ Maori Men's team (730) winning by 52 shots while the NZ Maori Women won their match by 17 shots.

Tasman golfer Ryan Chisnall led the way for the NZ Invitation Team when he carded rounds of 67 and 65 at the Tauranga Golf Club to be the standout performer in the contest.

Local Hayden Beard was also impressive as he had rounds of 69 and 68 for a three-under par total.

Nick Coxon (67), Luke Toomey (65) and Tyler Hodge (65) all had fine closing rounds to secure the title while Australian Amateur Champion Tae Koh (72) had the non-counting score.

The NZ Invitation team holds a sizeable 22 shot lead over the NZ Maori Team after round one.

Former NZ Maori Champion Jordan Golding was the best of his team when he signed for a one-under par total.

Meanwhile in the women's division, the NZ Maori Team enjoyed an impressive victory.

Local amateur Tyla Kingi, who leaves tomorrow for the Srixon Junior International, was the best of the NZ Maori women when she had rounds of 71 and 74 for a one-over par total.

Brooke Kingi (74) and New Zealand Amateur Champion Chantelle Cassidy (74) had the other counting scores while Kate Chadwick had the non-counting 84.

Catherine Bell was the best of the NZ Invitation Women's Team when she bounced back from her opening 81 with a two-under par 70.

The contest is set to be a regular fixture at the Carrus Open and is designed to foster development of young Maori golfers in New Zealand through elite level competition.

The competition which is being played as an additional event to the Charles Tour event for the first time sees six men and four women of NZ Maori and NZ European descent taking each other on in a stroke play contest.

The best five out of six scores count towards the men's total while the best three out of four scores in the women's competition tally for their team total.
