More gold for Bay surf lifesavers

Bay of Plenty surf lifesavers have continued their rich vein of form at the world championships in France, this time racing for their clubs.

Papamoa team members Andrew Trembath, Jake Hales, Mason Bryant, Scott Miller and Ben Johnston with their medal haul from the world interclub surf lifesaving championships overnight.

After the success of the national teams, with a Bay-laden New Zealand team winning their second consecutive world title, attention switched to the beach in the youth interclub division, where Papamoa's Mason Bryant, Scott Miller, Jake Hales and Andrew Trembath grabbed gold in the tube rescue, beating Spain's Club Alcarreño de Salvamento in the final.

Bryant had earlier won silver in the 2km beach run, while Hales, Trembath, Miller and Ben Johnston finished just behind the Biarritz team in the beach relay. Johnston also took silver in the board race, behind Byron Bay's Joshua Brown.

Olivia Eaton (Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service) grabbed her second world championship title in a week, beating Nicole Kay (Mooloolaba) and Golisano Tarnica (City of Perth) in the beach sprint. Eaton had earlier captured the beach flags title at the national teams competition.

And Omanu's Ben Cochrane also won silver, just headed by Scoob Lark (Woolacombe) in the ski race.

Mount Maunganui pair Adam Simpson and Sam Shergold, meanwhile, kicked off the open interclub racing by reaching the line-throw final and finishing sixth.

We can be So Proud of Papamoa Beach Surf Lifesaving Clubs, and their International Teams! The guys and girls have done an amazing job of Preperation, Funding, and now Delivery on the Day! Medals everywhere, certainly ranks them as likely the Best Prepared Lifesaving Team in The World! And there are still more inter-club competitions under way! We should now be looking to a Civic Welcome Home Parade. Bill Gibson-Patmore

Fantastic efforts and rewards by Olivia, and the teams from both Omanu and Mount Maunganui Surf Lifesaving Clubs. What an absolute wealth of talent from our City.! Proud of the whole collective and separate determination displayed in preparing, funding, traveling and competing for not only their Country, but also their individual Clubs. Well done to all competitors and supporters of Surf Lifesaving in Bay of Plenty. It's a club that gets a team to an event. It's an absolute thrill when the competitor then excels for their club in World Competition! Bill Gibson-Patmore
