Bridge work to bring delays

Motorists are advised to expect delays as work starts to strengthen Wainui Bridge on State Highway 2 south of Katikati this month.

The bridge, between Work Road and Sargent Drive, will reduce to one lane on Monday, September 8 between 9.30am and 3.30pm to allow contractors to put up scaffolding in preparation for the strengthening works.

Shoulder closures will be in place for the next six weeks ahead of a series of further lane closures.

Periodic stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place during the project, which is expected to be complete in mid-November.

NZ Transport Agency Bay of Plenty journey manager Nigel D'Ath says motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes when travelling over the bridge.

'The strengthening work involves installation of new steel beams along-side the existing concrete beams to increase the load capacity of the bridge.”

NZTA apologies for any inconvenience and thanks motorists for their patience and understanding.
