Girls’ finals flourish

Bay of Plenty secondary school girls' rugby is culminating with a final flurry of matches today as 10 teams jostle for final season standings.

Blake Park hosted five girls First XV matches this afternoon including the grand final between Opotiki College and Te Puke High School.

Beforehand, Tauranga Girls' College versus Rotorua Lakes High School, Whakatane High School and Te Wharekura O Mauao face off, Rotorua Girls' High School meets Trident High School and Taupo Nui-a-Tia College against Western Heights High School for third place.

The grand final promises to deliver an epic battle between Opoitki and Te Puke – pitting two neck and neck teams against each other.

Both sides come into the match with identical records so far this season, winning eight out of nine, an identical point's differential, and winning their semifinals 41-5 each.

Te Puke coach Mike Nitz is proud of his side's season so far, particularly after sitting bottom of the competition two years ago.

'Our senior players have stepped up to the mark this year. Our younger players are keen to learn from them,” says Nitz.

With Opotiki's strength coming in the form of their forwards, Nitz is expecting a tough battle upfront.

He says it is necessary they match the formidable Opotiki pack if they are to have a chance of unleashing what he describes as the 'best backs” in the competition.

Opotiki coach Richard Wilson agreeing with Nitz about his forward charges says it is going to be a close game no matter what.

'We've probably got the best forward pack, country wide at the moment. But the Te Puke backs are pretty lethal,” says Wilson.

'The crowd should see two different spectacles, a bunch of forwards who are really good and if we're unfortunate enough to let their backs have it, we'll get to see some backs who are really good.”

The final has added importance with the winner representing the Bay of Plenty in the National girl's knock-out competition. On August 30 the Bay representative will host the winner of the Waikato / Counties play-off.
