'Maori mums' ready to race

When Tauranga mothers Carla Beazley and Hereni Fulton applied for the adventure of a lifetime, they never thought they'd actually make the cut.

Now the pair is featuring in the inaugural Amazing Race Australia versus New Zealand premiering on TV2 tonight.

The television series will see five Kiwi pairings up against five Australian duos as they follow clues and complete challenges at pit stops marked across the globe.

The first team to arrive at the final pit stop wins $250,000.

Rhythmz Dance Co owner and mother-of-two Carla was visiting Hereni and her three children in October when she came across the application on Facebook.

Deciding to register for the chance to win the cash prize and free world travel, 38-year-old Carla and Hereni, 43, started filming their entry video straight away.

'When you apply for these things you never really think that you're actually going to get in,” says Carla.

Dubbed the 'Maori mums' of the competition, Carla and Hereni are proud they made the cut.

'We're so proud and I'm so glad that some Maori made the cut, and it was us,” says Carla.

'I feel like we're the underdogs in so many ways.”

Having only met four years ago at one of Carla's Zumba classes, Carla says she and Hereni's budding relationship could be a disadvantage within the race.

'My husband and I know each other so well that if we came to a challenge, we would know instantly without even having to mutter a word, who would be the best person to put forward for it.

'But Hereni and I don't have that background. So we still might second guess each other.”

But along with their travel experience and female intuition, Carla and Hereni believe their motherly intuition will give them an edge.

'I think we figured before we went on that we were going to be one of the older teams there and we thought having that maturity would be an advantage.

'A little bit of life experience goes a long way in intense situations I think.”

The Amazing Race Australia versus New Zealand airs on TV2 at 8.45pm tonight.
