Willow St shopping picks up

Willow Street retailers are enjoying increased business following the road's reopening to traffic.
Willow Street was closed to vehicle traffic between Hamilton and Wharf Streets for over a month while it was reconstructed.

Business is improving says Broncos Sports owner Ben Tuck.

The street was closed to traffic on June 17, and reopened last week. Cars will continue to be able to park on both sides of the street until about late November, says Tauranga City Council transportation manager Martin Parkes.
The Hopper bus service will not be moving down from Durham Street until after the canopy for the pedestrian shelter has been built on the northern side of Willow Street.
That job is currently out to tender.
Broncos Sports owner Ben Tuck says foot traffic through the shop went up by 50 per cent within days of Willow Street being reopened to traffic.
"It just shows what the parking thing does," says Ben. "It hasn't gone back up 100 per cent because a lot of the people they move away - and sometimes they don't come back."
The reconstruction was done in winter because that was the retailers' quietest time, says
Martin.
"Winter's not the time we build things, we tried to work with them as best we could."
During the process, The Copy Centre on the corner of Willow and Hamilton went into voluntary redundancy. The Stoney Creek shop further along Willow Street closed and Merhaba on The Strand closed.
Broncos reduced staff and City Markets reported turnover down 25-30 per cent.
