Sand bar gone

Mount Maunganui's beachfront holiday time Sand Bar will not reappear this summer.
The campaign to restore the popular beachfront bar failed at a Tauranga City Council meeting on Tuesday against concerted opposition from police.

The Sand Bar was once a flourishing entertainment hot spot.

In a 10 minute speech at the beginning of discussion, inspector Karl Wright St Clair spoke against the proposal saying the bar's absence last summer contributed to lower arrests.
Police were also critical of the YMCA-Sand Bar joint venture combining the bar with separate childcare and teenage holiday programmes.
Karl says police recorded 31 per cent fewer arrests after the Sand Bar shutdown compared with the previous year.
Other figures are that on new year's eve in 2008, when the Sand Bar was operating, St John Ambulance treated 58 people; 22 of them intoxicated.
In 2009 without the Sand Bar, they treated 37 people and only four of them were intoxicated.
Karl was unable to answer questions about the weather during the respective summers and police have only recorded the numbers in that detail for two years.
During councillor questioning he created a laugh when he asked if a question about practicality by Bill Faulkner related to the "togs/undies" dilemma.
Karl said there were 37 other liquor outlets "within walking distance" of the main beach.
"If you are at the beach and you want a swim, that's not practical if you want a beer," says Bill.
"Is that like the undies/togs question," says Carl, "if you put your clothes on it's pretty practical."
"If you have your boardies on it's practical to walk across the road, it is not practical to walk to the downtown Mount," says Bill.
The vote to permit the Sand Bar was lost with the Sand Bar supported by Bill Grainger, Mike Baker, Hayden Evans and Rick Curach.
