The intersection of Carmichael Road with State Highway 2 at west Bethlehem is closed.
The closure of the intersection is a requirement of the resource consent for the new roundabout at west Bethlehem.
This closure was initially planned in the early 1990s when the North West Urban Growth Structure Plan was adopted for implementation.
The two main reasons for the closure were to improve safety for traffic accessing the state highway via the new roundabout and to stop traffic using Carmichael Road as a 'rat run' to the Central City/Otumoetai/Brookfield area and vice versa.
The intersection will be physically closed with a post and rail fence with an access way for pedestrians and cyclists.
A sealed cul-de-sac will be built on the Carmichael Road side of the fence.
Traffic is still be able to access the state highway from Carmichael Road (and vice versa) via Te Paeroa Road and the new roundabout. With the increasing volumes of traffic on the state highway this change will improve road safety in the general area.
The new roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Te Paeroa Road is expected to be completed in the next two weeks - subject to favourable weather.
