Driving hazards after the flood

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is advising motorists to take care on rural roads as contractors continue to clean up flood damage.
Oropi Gorge Road remains closed Monday morning following a tree fall that blocked both lanes on Saturday morning.

Other roads affected by slips over the weekend were predominantly in the eastern end of the Western Bay District - Te Puke, Pongakawa area. At times some of these roads were down to one lane.
No.3 Road, Waitao Road, Old Coach Road, Roydon Downs Road, Maniatutu Road, Reid Road, Allport Road, SH 36 (Pyes Pa Road) was closed to one lane on Saturday evening as a result of a slip, both lanes are open Monday morning. Glue Pot Road.
Council's road maintenance contractor, Inroads, received around 30 calls over the weekend, says Western Bay of Plenty communications manager Peter Hennessy.
"The only reports of surface flooding received were in Te Puke toward the southern end of the township," says Peter. "I understand no damage has been reported at this stage as a result.
"Inroads expect the clean up to take several days so are advising motorists to drive with care and be extra vigilant around work sites."
Meanwhile Whakatane Civil Defence Controller, Diane Turner, says the seven households evacuated on Sunday from the Paroa Road/Fortunes Road area are able to return to their homes.
The stopbank breach on the left bank of the Te Rahu Canal near Whakatane is repaired and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council is continuing to pump water from the low lying farmland.
A number of Whakatane schools remain closed due to flooding.
