Strand park unveiled

The consultation process on the Tauranga waterfront plan is underway with an open day, which will be repeated again on Saturday.
Concept drawings of the project and people on hand to explain them are onboard the The Kestrel pontoon.

People on the pontoon talking about the waterfront.

It is a staged development with the first resource consents being sought for the land seaward of the railway line between the Harbourside restaurant and Dive Crescent.
As it stands, the concept plan calls for the removal of The Strand reclamation car parks to transform the area into a waterfront park.
Project manager Tony Bodger says parking is one of the issues visitors to the pontoon today have been raising with staff.
"We are getting some really positive feedback and some really good feedback as well," says Tony.
Transportation manager Martin Parkes says an additional car parking building is planned for Durham Street, and there is car parking available in the existing car parking buildings.
Ryder Consultants are managing the consents process. After the two 10am-2pm open days, Tony says resource consent applications will be prepared for lodgement, hopefully before Christmas.
After the consents are applied for public submissions on the plans will be called for.
