Uruguayan backpacker Juan Marcos Harispe is spending the rest of today in the city with no voice after watching his national side take victory over England in this morning's FIFA World Cup match.
Huddled around a television at Tauranga Central Backpackers today, Juan enjoyed a high-pitched rollercoaster of emotions as Uruguay shocked football fans, beating England 2-1.
Uruguayan Juan Marcos Harispe celebrates his country's 2-1 victory over England in this morning's FIFA world cup match.
Reducing England's World Cup dreams to a slither, Juan was impressed with star Uruguayan player Luis Suarez, who scored the two winning goals in Brazil.
'The moment is very special to Uruguay,” says Juan, who was wearing Luis' number nine jersey.
'Suarez had surgery and today scored two goals. For me that is very special.
'Uruguay has some amazing players – [Diego] Forlan, [Luis] Suarez and [Edinson] Cavani.”
'It has been a pleasure being here watching the match with other backpackers,” says the 23-year-old, who was flanked by fellow backpackers, including two Mexicans, two Chileans, an Argentinian and a Nepalese fan.
Juan says his country has completely come to a standstill today, 'because everyone is watching the world cup.”
His Twitter and Facebook accounts are going off, as his friends and family back home celebrate the win.
While worried from Uruguay's 3-1 loss 3-1 to Costa Rica last week, Juan says he was 'hopeful” leading up to today's game.
Tauranga Central Backpackers owner Darryl Herbert says Juan is an emotional man today.
'Mr Uruguay was standing on the back of our couch, weeping with joy.
'People say the Italians are emotional, but I think South American's are too.”
But Darryl says his English guests 'weren't very happy”.
Juan, who is in New Zealand until December, will watch Uruguay take on Italy next Tuesday morning at 4am – once again from the comfort of Tauranga Central Backpackers.
'Now we have to at least tie or win against Italy – but it doesn't matter, we bet England.”
