The Stoney Creek Shop in Willow Street closed on Thursday; the second inner city business to do so within seven days and point some blame at the downtown road works.
The Copy Centre on the corner of Willow Street and Hamilton Street closed last Friday.
Stoney Creek on Willow Street has closed down.
The Stoney Creek Shop owner Kerry Crawford says The Willow Street road works are not the only factor.
"We would like to put it down to something as simple as that, but no it's not.
"It's economic climate, people are just not out there shopping. The road works have had an effect because people can't drive through. They can't park in front of us, it has had an impact but I wouldn't like to say it's the reason why we are closing the shop."
The door counter on the shop at 128 Willow Street shows foot traffic is half what it was a year ago, says Kerry.
"There's a huge downturn in foot traffic. I just don't know where the people are."
All of the overheads and little of the profit was in the shop says Kerry.
"Hardly the way to do business is it?"
Two staff are looking for other work. The online shop, Stoneycreekshop.co.nz remains open.
"We are at the luxury end of the market, so when people stop spending they stop buying toys first - or they make it last another season."
The Stoney Creek Shop sells hunting, tramping, backpacking and travelling supplies.
It's been operating in its present location for eight years after crossing from the other side of Willow Street.
The Stoney Creek Shop is owned and operated completely separately to Greerton-based Stoney Creek Manufacturing Ltd, which designs and manufactures the range of clothing and accessories that gives the shop its name.
"We are opening next week for a couple of days for a clearance of whatever we have left."
