Chiefs trio in ABs

A trio of Chiefs are among an All Black side bracing themselves to re-ignite fierce rivalry with a depleted English outfit this weekend.

All Black and Chiefs lock Brodie Retallick against Australia in 2013.

In their first tour to New Zealand since 2008, England will face the All Blacks in three tests along with a mid-week uncapped match against the Crusaders – beginning with the first test in Auckland on Saturday.

The three-week Super Rugby break marks the June international test window, the second year of an International Rugby Board initiative running through to 2019.

Chiefs co-captains Liam Messam and Aaron Cruden along with Brodie Retallick all get the nod in the starting line-up despite the Super Rugby champions failing to regain the spectacular form of 2013.

Messam's inclusion alongside captain Richie McCaw and returning All Black Jerome Kaino provides a formidable loose forward trio to combat the physicality of the English, while Retallick is an instant selection alongside Sam Whitelock as one of the world's best locking combinations.

Cruden on the other hand may have been given the coaches loyalty card ahead of Hurricanes Beauden Barrett following a rusty return to the field after six weeks out with a broken thumb.

The selections are part of a hugely experienced match day team with 968 caps in the 23, and an average age of 27-years-old.

Kaino's selection sees him don the black jersey for the first time since the 2011 Rugby World Cup final after a two year stint in Japan.

The selectors are also looking to the future adding three uncapped players, TJ Perenara, Patrick Tuipulotu and Malakai Fekitoa, to the bench.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is looking forward to the test series in what poses as a chance to set an early benchmark for the 2014 squad.

'It is the first time in our long history that we are playing a three-match series against England and they are the perfect opponent for us at this time,” says Hansen.

'We have a healthy respect for England and what they will bring to the contest. Our preparation, though limited by time, has been very good.”

Hansen outlines a strong desire in the group to keep improving the quality of performances following on from recording the perfect season last year.

'We are fully aware that if we don't, we are vulnerable to those teams that have the same mindset of improvement.

"We see this Test match as one which will be very physical with lots of ball movement that will challenge both sides aerobically and mentally."
